There are several things that should be considered when adding an external link.

Each link should be considered on its merits, using the following guidelines. As the number of external links in an article grows longer, assessment should become stricter.

If the answer is "because it would never qualify to be used as a [[WP:RS|reliable source]] for anything," then don't link. If the answer is, "because the content of that external link is too long and would not be possible to summarize it in the article, but it is a reliable source", you may then consider adding that link as well. Better still, discuss in talk page with other editors about the appropriateness of adding any new links.
