మహారాష్ట్ర స్థానికులను '''మహారాష్ట్రియన్''' అంటారు. 2001 జనాభా లెక్కల ప్రకారం మహారాష్ట్ర జనాభా 96,752,247. ఇందులో [[మరాఠీ]] మాతృభాషగా ఉన్నవారు 62,481,681. రాష్ట్రం జనసాంద్రత చ.కి.మీ.కు 322.5. రాష్ట్రజనాభాలో పురుషులు 5.03 కోట్లు, స్త్రీలు 4.64 కోట్లు. ఆడ, మగ నిష్పత్తి 922/1000. పట్టణ జనాభా 42.4 %. అక్షరాస్యులు 77.27%. స్రీలలో అక్షరాస్యత 67.5%, పురుషులలో 86.2%. 1991-2001 మధ్య జనాభా వృద్ధిరేటు 22.57%.
