సాధారణంగా ఉష్ణశక్తిని కొలవడానికి వాడతారు. మనం ఆరోగ్యంగా ఉండాలన్నా, బతికి ఉండాలన్నా, ఏ పని చేయాలన్నా శక్తి అవసరం. అది మనకు ఆహారం ద్వారా లభిస్తుంది. ఒక మనిషికి ఎంత ఆహారం కావాలి,. తద్వారా ఎన్ని కెలోరీల శక్తి అవసరం అనే విషయాలు ఆ మనిషి వయసు, వృత్తి, ప్రాంతాన్ని బట్టి మారుతుంటాయి. సాధారణంగా 30 సంవత్సరాల వయసుగల వ్యక్తికి సుమారు 3500 కెలోరీల శక్తి అవసరం. యవ్వనంలో ఉన్నవారికి అదనంగా శక్తి అవసరం. చలి ప్రాంతాల్లో ఉన్నవారికి, గర్భిణులకు, అధిక శారీరక శ్రమ చేసేవారికి కూడా అదనపు శక్తి అవసరం అవుతుంది. మనం తినే ఆహారంలో కార్బొహైడ్రేట్లు, మాంసకృత్తులు (ప్రొటీన్లు), కొవ్వులు (ఫ్యాట్స్) ప్రధాన శక్తిదాయకాలు. మనకు సమారు 60 శాతం శక్తి పిండి పదార్థాల (కార్బొహైడ్రేట్స్) నుంచి వస్తుంది. దాదాపు 20 శాతం మాంసకృత్తులు, మరో 20 శాతం కొవ్వు పదార్థాల నుంచి లభిస్తుంది. కెలోరీలు మరీ ఎక్కువయితే [[ఊబకాయం]] (ఒబేసిటీ) వస్తుంది. మరీ తక్కువైతే సొమ్మసిల్లి పడిపోతారు. సంతులన ఆహారం తీసుకుంటూ, వ్యాయామం చేస్తూ ఆరోగ్యాన్ని కాపాడుకోవడం అందరి కర్తవ్యం.
