కృపలానీ తన రాజకీయ శేషజీవితమంతా ప్రతిపక్షములోనే గడిపాడు. 1938 నుండి ఈయన భార్య అయిన [[సుచేతా కృపలానీ]], కాంగ్రేసు పార్టీలో అంచెలంచెలుగా ఎదిగి కేంద్ర మంత్రివర్గములో అనేక మార్లు మంత్రిపదవులతో సహా అనేక పదవులు పొందింది. ఈమె దేశములోనే మొట్టమొదటి మహిళా ముఖ్యమంత్రిగా ఉత్తర ప్రదేశ్ లో ప్రమాణస్వీకారం చేసింది. కృపలానీ దంపతులు పార్లమెంటులో తరచూ ఒకర్నొకరు ఢీకొనేవారు.
One matter they agreed on was the undesirability of vast parts of the [[Hindu Marriage Act]], particularly the controversial 'Restitution of Conjugal Rights' clause. By this clause a partner who had survived an unsuccessful filing for divorce could move the courts to return to the status quo ante in terms of conjugal interaction.
