ఒకే గృహంలో నివసించే కొంత మంది [[మానవులు|మానవుల]] సమూహం - '''కుటుంబము''' (Family). వీరు సాధారణంగా [[పుట్టుక]]తో లేదా [[వివాహము]]తో సంబంధమున్నవారు. మన సమాజంలో వివిధ మతపరమైన వివాహచట్టాలు [[కుటుంబవ్యవస్థ]]ను గుర్తించాయి. "కుటుంబం" అనే పదాన్ని మానవులకే కాకుండా ఇతర జంతుసమూహాలకు కూడా వాడుతారు. అనేక జంతుజాతులలో ఆడ, మగ జంతువులు వాటి [[పిల్లలు]] ఒక గుంపుగా సహజీవనం చేస్తుండడం గమనించవచ్చును. పెద్ద జంతువులు పిల్లజంతువులకు ఆహారం, రక్షణ కలిగించడం ఇలాంటి కుటుంబ వ్యవస్థలో మౌలికాంశంగా కనిపిస్తుంది.

==ప్రాథమిక సూత్రం==

"కుటుంబం"లో ఉండే కొన్ని ముఖ్యలక్షణాలు - రక్త సంబంధము (consanguinity), సహచరత్వము (affinity), ఒకే నివాసం (household /co-residence). ఈ లక్షణాలు ఒకో సమాజంలో ఒకో విధంగా వర్తిస్తుంటాయి.
