సల్మాన్ తండ్రి సలీం ప్రముఖ స్క్రీన్ రచయిత. బివి హోతో అయిసీ (1988) సినిమాలో సహాయనటునిగా తెరంగేట్రం చేశారు ఆయన. ఆ తరువాత సూరజ్ బర్జత్య దర్శకత్వంలో మైనే ప్యార్ కియా (1989) సినిమాతో కథానాయకునిగా మారారు సల్మాన్. 90వ దశకంలో ఆయన నటించిన హమ్ ఆప్కే హై కౌన్..! (1994), కరన్ అర్జున్ (1995), బీవీ నెం.1 (1999) వంటి సినిమాలతో బాలీవుడ్ లో తనదైన గుర్తింపు తెచుకున్నారు ఆయన. 1998లో [[కరణ్ జోహార్]] దర్శకత్వంలో వచ్చిన కుచ్ కుచ్ హోతా హై సినిమాలోని ఆయన నటనకు ఫిలింఫేర్
