[[భారత జాతీయ కాంగ్రెస్]] యొక్క ఏకఛత్రాధిపత్యానికి 1977 లో మొదటి సారిగా విఘాతం గలిగినది. [[ఇందిరా గాంధీ]] నేతృత్వంలో ఈ పార్టీ మొదటిసారిగా ఓటమిని చవిచూసింది. కాంగ్రెస్ కు వ్యతిరేకంగా వున్న అనేక పార్టీలు ఏకమై కేంద్రంలో ప్రభుత్వాన్ని ఏర్పాటు చేశాయి. అలాగే 1989 లో విశ్వనాథ్ ప్రతాప్ సింగ్ (వి.పి.సింగ్) నేతృత్వంలో మరోసారి కాంగ్రెస్ తన సత్తాను మరియు అధికారాన్ని కోల్పోయింది.
 
1992 లోనూ, తరువాతనూ, ఏకపార్టీ గుత్తాధిపత్యం నశించి, అనేక పార్టీల కూటముల వ్యవస్థ రూపునందుకుంది. ఈ వ్యవస్థలో అనేక పార్టీలు కూటములుగా ఏర్పడి, ప్రభుత్వాన్ని ఏర్పాటు చేసే విధానమునకు మార్గము ఏర్పడినది. ఇందులో ప్రాంతీయ పార్టీలు ప్రధాన పాత్రలు పోషిస్తున్నాయి. సమాజ్‌వాదీ పార్టీ, రాష్ట్రీయ జనతాదళ్, తెలుగుదేశం, అన్నా డి.యం.కె. అస్సాం గణపరిషత్, నేషనల్ ఫ్రంట్, లోక్‌దళ్, బహుజనసమాజ్ పార్టీ, లాంటివి ముఖ్యమైనవి.
In 1992, the heretofore one-party-dominant politics in India gave way to a [[coalition government|coalition system]] wherein no single party can expect to achieve a majority in the Parliament to form a government, but rather has to depend on a process of coalition building with other parties to form a block and claim a majority to be invited to form the government. This has been a consequence of strong regional parties which ride on the back of regional aspirations. While parties like the TDP and the DMK had traditionally been strong regional contenders, the 1990s saw the emergence of other regional players such as the Lok Dal, Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Samaj Party and Janta Dal. These parties are traditionally based on regional aspirations, e.g. Telengana Rastra Samiti or strongly influenced by caste considerations, e.g. Bahujan Samaj Party which claims to represent the Dalits.
 
ప్రస్తుతం, "యునైటెడ్ ప్రోగ్రెసివ్ అలియెన్స్", కాంగ్రెస్ పార్టీ ఆధ్వర్యంలో, ప్రభుత్వం ఏర్పాటు చేసింది. విపక్షం లో "నేషనల్ డెమోక్రటిక్ అలియెన్స్" పార్టీని భాజపా నేతృత్వం వహిస్తున్నది.
