తన వీపు భాగానికి క్యాన్సర్ రావడం వలన హైదర్ 6 డిసెంబర్ 1782న తన శిబిరంలో మరణించారు, అయితే పర్షియన్ భాషలో కొన్ని చారిత్రక ఆధారాల ఆధారంగా ఇస్లామీయ కేలండర్ లో హిజ్రీ 1 Moharram 1197 నుండి హిజ్రీ 4 Moharram 1197 వరకు తేదీలు మధ్య ఆయన మరణం సంభవించింది అని తెలుస్తుంది. ఈ తేదీలులో తేడాలకు కారణం [[చాంద్రమాన క్యాలెండర్]] మరియు పరిసర రాజ్యాలలో చంద్రుడు వీక్షణలలో తేడాలు వల్ల కావచ్చు.
Hyder's advisers tried to keep his death a secret until Tipu could be recalled from the Malabar coast. Upon learning of his father's death Tipu immediately returned to Chittoor to assume the reins of power. His accession was not without problems: he had to put down an attempt by an uncle to place Tipu's brother Abdul Karim on the throne.<ref name=Bri22/> The British learned of his death within 48 hours of its occurrence, but the dilatory attitude of Coote's replacement, [[James Stuart (d. 1793)|James Stuart]], meant that they were unable to capitalise on it militarily.
