గుమ్మటంను ఆంగ్లంలో డోమ్ అంటారు. ఒక గది యొక్క సగం పైభాగాన గోపురం ఆకారంలో నిర్మించి ఆ గోళాకారపు నిర్మాణ కింది భాగం బోలుగా (ఖాళీ) ఉన్నట్లయితే ఈ గోళాకారపు నిర్మాణ భాగంను గుమ్మటం లేక డోం అంటారు. చరిత్రలో అనేక చారిత్రక కట్టడాలకు కప్పుగా గుమ్మట నిర్మాణశైలిని ఉపయోగించారు. గోపురం ఆకారంలో నిర్మించిన ఈ డోం నిర్మాణమునకు వివిధ రకాల పదార్థాలను ఉపయోగించారు. అర్ధ వృత్తాకారంలో నిర్మించిన నిరాడంబరమైన భవనాలు మరియు సమాధులను ప్రాచీన మధ్య ప్రాచ్యం లో కనుగొన్నారు. రోమన్లు ఆలయాలను మరియు ప్రభుత్వ భవంతులను అధునాతన సాంకేతిక పరిజ్ఞానంతో డోం ఆకారం వచ్చేలా నిర్మించడం ప్రారంభించడాన్ని రోమన్ భవన నిర్మాణ విప్లవంగా చెప్పవచ్చు. ఒక చదరపు ఆకారపు గది నుండి వృత్తాకార గోపురం వచ్చేలా నిర్మించడాన్ని పురాతన పర్షియన్లు కనిపెట్టారు. సస్సానిడ్ సామ్రాజ్యం పర్షియాలో భారీస్థాయి అర్ధ వృత్తాకార భవన నిర్మాణాలను ప్రారంభించారు, వాటిలో కొన్ని ప్యాలెస్ ఆఫ్ అర్దాషిర్, సర్‍వెస్తాన్ మరియు Ghal'eh Dokhtar.
