Discovery Enrico Fermi and a team of scientists at the University of Rome reported that they had discovered element 94 in 1934.[44] Fermi called the element hesperium and mentioned it in his Nobel Lecture in 1938.[45] The sample was actually a mixture of barium, krypton, and other elements, but this was not known at the time because nuclear fission had not been discovered yet.[46]

Glenn T. Seaborg and his team at Berkeley were the first to produce plutonium.Plutonium (specifically, plutonium-238) was first produced and isolated on December 14, 1940, and chemically identified on February 23, 1941, by Dr. Glenn T. Seaborg, Edwin M. McMillan, J. W. Kennedy, Z. M. Tatom, and A. C.
