జోష్ వార్డిల్ మొదట్లో తన కోసం, అతని భాగస్వామి ఆడుకునేందుకు ఈ ఆటను సృష్టించాడు. చివరికి 2021 అక్టోబరులో దాన్ని బహిరంగంగా అందరూ ఆడుకునేలా మార్చాడు. ఆటగాళ్ళు తమ రోజువారీ ఫలితాలను ఎమోజి స్క్వేర్‌ల లాగా కాపీ చేసే ట్విట్టర్‌లో పంచుకునే సామర్థ్యాన్ని 2021 డిసెంబరులో జోడించాడు. దాంతో ఈ ఆటకు పెద్దయెత్తున ప్రజాదరణ వచ్చింది. ఈ ఆటకు అనేక క్లోన్‌లు, వైవిధ్యాలు కూడా వచ్చాయి., ఇంగ్లీషుతో మొదలైన ఈ ఆటను ఇతర భాషలలో కూడా తయారు చేసారు. తెలుగుతో పాటు కొన్ని ఇతర భారతీయ భాషల్లో కూడా ఉంది. ఈ ఆటను న్యూయార్క్ టైమ్స్ కంపెనీ 2022 జనవరిలో కొనుగోలు చేసింది. వెల ఎంతో తెలియనప్పటికీ ఏడు అంకెల డాలర్లలో ఉంటుందని అంచనా వేసారు. దీన్ని ఉచితంగా ఉంచే ఆలోచన ఉంది. 2022 ఫిబ్రవరిలో న్యూయార్క్ టైమ్స్, ఈ ఆటను తమ వెబ్‌సైట్‌కి తరలించింది.

ప్రతి రోజు, వర్డిల్ ఒక ఐదక్షరాల పదాన్ని ఎంచుకుంటుంది. ఆటగాళ్ళు ఆరు ప్రయత్నాలలో ఈ పదాన్ని కనుక్కోవాలి.[1] ప్రతి ప్రయత్నంలో ఆటగాడు ఒక ఐదక్షరాల అర్థవంతమైన పదాన్ని ఊహించి రాస్తాడు. వర్డిల్ ఆ పదంలోని అక్షరాల గడులను ఆకుపచ్చ, పసుపు, బూడిద రంగుల్లో ఏదో ఒకదానిలో చూపుతుంది: ఆకుపచ్చ రంగు ఆ అక్షరం పదంలో ఉందనీ, పదంలో సరైన స్థానం లోనే ఉందనీ సూచిస్తుంది. పసుపు రంగు అంటే ఆ అక్షరం సమాధానంలో ఉంది గానీ సరైన స్థానంలో లేదని, బూడిద రంగులో (గ్రే) ఉంటే ఆ అక్షరం అసలు సమాధానంలో లేనే లేదనీ అర్థం.[2] ఆటలో "హార్డ్ మోడ్" అనే ఎంపిక ఉంది. ఈ పద్ధతిలో ఆటగాళ్లు ఆకుపచ్చ, పసుపు రంగులలో ఉన్న అక్షరాలను తదుపరి ప్రయత్నాల్లో పెట్టే పదాల్లో చేర్చి తీరాల్సి ఉంటుంది.[3] వర్డిల్ రోజుకొక పదం ఇస్తుంది. ఆటగాళ్ళందరికీ ఒకే పదం ఇస్తుంది.[4] ఆటలో ఒక చీకటి థీము కూడా ఉంది. అలాగే వర్ణాంధుల కోసం హై కాంట్రాస్టు థీము కూడా ఉంది. ఈ థీములో ఆకుపచ్చ, పసుపు రంగుల స్థానంలో ఆరెంజి, నీలం రంగులుంటాయి.[3][5]

వార్డిల్ మొదట్లో తన కోసం, అతని భాగస్వామి పాలక్ షా కోసం ఈ ఆటను సృష్టించాడు. 2021 అక్టోబరు మధ్యలో ఈ ఆట తమ బంధువులలో వేగంగా వ్యాపించాక, అతను దానిని బహిరంగపరిచాడు. తన పేరు లోని ఇంటిపేరును శ్లేషిస్తూ, ఇంగ్లీషు వర్డ్‌ను సూచించేలా దానికి వర్డిల్ అని అని పేరు పెట్టాడు. ఆటలో తమ ఫలితాన్ని ఇతరులతో పంచుకునే అంశాన్ని జోడించిన తర్వాత, ఆటకు ఆదరణ పెరిగింది. ఆటగాళ్ళు తమ ఫలితాలను రంగుల చతురస్రాకార ఎమోజి గ్రిడ్ రూపంలో కాపీ చేసుకుని దాన్ని ట్విట్టర్లో ప్రచురించే వీలు కలిగాక, 2021 డిసెంబరు చివరలో ట్విట్టరులో ఈ ఆట వైరల్‌గా మారింది.
