1879 లో బ్రిటిషు సామ్రాజ్యం, జులు రాజ్యం మధ్య ఆంగ్లో-జులు యుద్ధం జరిగింది. లార్డు కార్నార్వాను కెనడాలో విజయవంతంగా ప్రవేశపెట్టిన ఫెడరేషనును అనుసరిస్తూ ఇలాంటి రాజకీయ ప్రయత్నాలు ఆఫ్రికా రాజ్యాలు, గిరిజన ప్రాంతాలు, దక్షిణ ఆఫ్రికాలో బోయెరు రిపబ్లిక్కులతో విజయవంతం కావచ్చని భావించారు. 1874 లో సర్ హెన్రీ బార్టిలు ఫెరె బ్రిటిషు సామ్రాజ్యం హై కమిషనరుగా దక్షిణాఫ్రికాకు పంపబడ్డాడు. అలాంటి ప్రణాళికలను తీసుకురావడానికి బోయర్సు స్వతంత్ర రాజ్యాలు, జులులండు సామ్రాజ్యం, దాని సైన్యం అడ్డంకులుగా ఉన్నాయి. జులు జాతీయుడు బ్రిటీషువారిని ఐసాండల్వానా యుద్ధంలో ఓడించారు.
