శంకర్ మహదేవన్ [[ముంబై]] శివారు ప్రాంతమైన చెంబూరులో పుట్టి, పెరిగారు, వీరు పాలక్కడ్, [[కేరళ]] నుండి వచ్చిన తమిళ అయ్యర్ కుటుంబానికి చెందినవారు. ఇతను తన బాల్యంలోనే హిందూస్థానీ శాస్త్రీయ సంగీతం మరియు కర్ణాటక సంగీతం నేర్చుకున్నాడు మరియు ఐదు సంవత్సరాల వయసులో [[వీణ]] వాయించటం ప్రారంభించాడు
He learned [[Hindustani classical music]] and [[Carnatic music]] in his childhood and started playing the [[veena (Instrument)|veena]] at the age of five. He studied music under the guidance of [[Shrinivas Khale|Pandit Srinivas Khale]], a well known Marathi music composer. He went to [[Our Lady of Perpetual Succour High School - Chembur|Our Lady of Perpetual Succour High School]] in [[Chembur]]. He subsequently attended [[SIES College of Arts, Science, and Commerce|SIES]] College in [[Sion, Mumbai|Sion]] and completed his [[Higher Secondary (School) Certificate|HSC]]. He graduated in 1988 with a degree in Computer Science and Software Engineering from [[Ramrao Adik Institute of Technology]] in [[Navi Mumbai]] under the auspices of [[Mumbai University]].
