రామ్ గోపాల్ వర్మ తన సినీ జీవితాన్ని ఎస్.ఎస్.క్రియేషన్స్ నిర్మించిన [[రావుగారిల్లు]], [[కలెక్టర్ గారి అబ్బాయి]] చిత్రాలకి అసిస్టెంట్ డైరెక్టర్ గా మొదలు పెట్టారు.తెలుగు మరియు భారతీయ సినీ ప్రపంచంలో [[శివ]] సినిమా ద్వారా తన ఉనికిని ప్రపంచానికి చాటారు.ఈ చిత్రం కాలేజి నేపధ్యంలో హింసాత్మక కధను చొప్పించి నిర్మించారు.ఎటువంటి ఆధారం,శిక్షణ, సహాయ సహకారాలు లేకుండా, 28 ఏళ్ల వయసులో తెలుగు చిత్ర పరిశ్రమలో అగ్ర నటుడైన [[నాగార్జున]] ను చిత్ర నిర్మాణానికి ఒప్పించగలిగారు.ఆయన కధ చెప్పిన విధానం నచ్చి నాగార్జున స్వయంగా చిత్ర నిర్మాణాన్ని చేపట్టారు.శివ చిత్రం తెలుగు చిత్ర ప్రపంచంలో ఒక చెరగని ముద్రని వేసుకుంది.హిందీ భాష లో కూడా ఈ చిత్రాన్ని అదే పేరుతో పునర్నిర్మించారు కానీ తెలుగు లో సాధించినంత విజయాన్ని హిందీ లో సాధించలేదు.
His later movies ''Kshana kshanam'' (starring [[వెంకటేష్]] and Sri devi in the lead) was loosly based on a [[Hollywood]] flick [[Romancing the Stone]] and was reminescent of his relationship with a college sweetheart named Satya (who he went on to name a movie after later in his career), ''Raatri'' (a bilingual horror movie with [[Revathi]] in the lead),''Antham'' (another bilingaul criminal-cop movie with [[Nagarjuna]] and [[Urmila Matondkar]] in the lead, all failed to repeat the commercial success of ''Shiva''. ''Govinda Govinda'' (with [[Nagarjuna]] and Sri devi in the lead) became controversial because of a scene where the villain steps on the palm of Lord వెంకటేష్wara to steal the diamond studded crown. Indian censor board asked him to delete this scene. Despite the hype it generated, the movie became a dud at the boxoffice.
