ఆమె గుంటూరు జిల్లా పేటేరు గ్రామంలో సంగీత కారుల కుటుంబానికి చెందిన శ్రీహరి రావు మరియు సుశీల దంపతులకు జన్మించారు. ఆమె మద్రాసుకు వెళ్ళి సంగీతాన్ని అభ్యసించారు. 1954 మరియు 1955 సంవత్సరాలలో ఆమె వోకల్ మరియు వీణ వాద్యాలలో మద్రాసు టెక్నికల్ బోర్డు వారినుండి డిప్లొమా పరీక్ష ఉత్తీర్ణులయ్యారు. అదే సమయం లో ఆమె ఆల్ ఇండియా రేడియో లో సెమీ-క్లాసికల్ మరియు లైట్ మ్యూజిక్ లలో తన సంగీతాన్నందించారు. ఆమె తెలుసు సినిమాకు నేపధ్యగాయకురాలిగా కూడా పనిచేసారు. ఆమె "కుంకుమరేఖ" , "చివరికి మిగిలేది" , "కలిమిలేములు" , "పచ్చని సంసారం" వంటి సోలో చిత్రాలకు పాటలను పాడటమే కాకుండా హిందీ సినిమా "చోరీ చోరీ" (రాజ్ కపూర్ సినిమా) కు వీణలో తిల్లాన రికార్డింగు లో కూడా పనిచేసారు. ఆమె ఆ సినిమాలో వీణా వాద్యంతో కనిపిస్తారు. ఆమె తండ్రి 1960 లో ఆమెను హైదరాబాదుకు తీసుకువెళ్ళిన మూలంగా ఆమె నేపద్య గాయకురాలిగా కెరీర్ కు తెరపడింది. కానీ ఆమె తన సంగీతం తో ఆల్ ఇండియా రేడియో లో పనిచేసి అలరించారు.
ఆమెకు అనేక బిరుదులు, సత్కారాలు వచ్చాయి. ఆమెకు మధురగాయని అనే బిరుదు వచ్చింది. ఆమె ఎ.యు.స్కూలు ఆఫ్ పైన్ ఆర్ట్స్ లో వోకల్ ఉపాధ్యాయురాలిగా 13 సంవత్సరాలు పనిచేసారు. అదే విధంగా 10 సంవత్సరాలు ఎ.యు. హైస్కూలు లో 1977 వరకు పనిచేసారు.
Born in the Mukkamala family of musicians to Srihari Rao and Suseela in Peteru in Guntur district and brought up at Madras, Sunanda with her amazing flair in music got endeared to many a connoisseur even as a child. After systematic training she passed the diploma examination of the Madras Technical Board in vocal and veena in 1954 and 1955 respectively and at the same time earned the name of a favourite performer not only for sabhas under the junior category but also for the studios of AIR for the semi-classical and light music chunks recorded for broadcast. Attracting the critical attention of stalwart cine music directors like Venu and Aswaddhama, she not only sang solos for feature films, 'Kumkumarekha', 'Chivarikimigiledi', 'Kalimilemulu', 'Patchanisamsaram' and the likes during 1959-60 but also was in the orchestra playing on the veena for a thilana recorded for the hit Hindi movie 'Chori Chori' of Raj Kapoor and also appeared on the screen with the instrument. To her utter disappointment, her father preferred to move away to Hyderabad in 1960 and lost a possibly noteworthy career as play-back singer once for all. However, not depressed with despair, she soon became a graded artiste of AIR, Hyderabad ,both for classical and light vocal and by choice participated in all the prestigious musical features produced at the studios of Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam as well besides rendering regular Carnatic and light music recitals to stand acclaimed even by critics of the stature of R.M. Challa as an endowment of a melodious voice with a charming felicity capturing a wide range of emotions and accentuating the same with effortless ease deriving a soul tickling expression over all. A winner of many a laurel including the title Madhuragayani, Sunanda who feels quite at home singing Hindi, Sanskrit, Tamil and Kannada surfacing the native fervour of the respective languages enjoyed popular demand all over the State. She was a vocal teacher for 13 years for the AU School of Fine Arts and 10 years for the AU High School up to 1997. Astonishingly enough, even at the age of 65 she retains the same freshness and fervour of melody in her voice and singing with the same effortless ease.
