Usage

Use this Rcat template in any namespace.

• Use this redirect category (Rcat) template for redirect pages that are considered "historic" names for the target article. Do not use this template on redirects that are nonhistoric former names or simply former working titles of the target article. If the name is an older title but not considered historic, then use {{R from former name}} instead.

Example: Calcutta → Kolkata; the historic capital of West Bengal in India was Calcutta.

• Apply this Rcat in the following manner:

#REDIRECT [[Target page name]] {{R from historic name}}

This is in accord with the instructions found at Wikipedia:REDCAT.

• The template {{This is a redirect}} can also be used to add this Rcat to redirects along with others that are appropriate.
• This Rcat populates Redirects from historic names and, when added to a redirect in Mainspace, it also sorts to the Printworthy redirects categories. At some point in the future, Jimmy Wales wants to make a printed version of the full Wikipedia encyclopedia, and historic names are suitable for a printed version. In other words, historic names are printworthy.
• For a redirect that targets an article that is titled with a historic name, use {{R to historic name}} instead of this template.
