2013 లో ఉత్తరాఖండ్ లో పలు రోజులపాటు కురిసిన విపరీతమైన వర్షాల కారణంగా వరదలు, కొండచరియలు విరిగి పడటం వల్ల జనజీవనం అస్థవ్యస్తమయ్యింది. 2004 లో భారతదేశం ఎదుర్కొన్న [[2004 సునామీ|సునామీ]] తరువాత ఇదే అత్యంత ఘోరమైన విపత్తు. రాష్ట్రంలో మామూలుగా వచ్చే వరదల కన్నా ఎక్కువగా రావడానికి ఒక కారణం నదుల మీద నిర్మించే ఆనకట్టల తాలూకు వ్యర్ధాలు. ఈ వ్యర్థ పదార్థాలు నదుల సహజ ప్రవాహానికి అడ్డం పడి కట్టలు తెంచుకోవడానికి కారణం అయ్యాయి. జూన్ 16, 2013 ఈ వరదల్లో అతి ముఖ్యమైన రోజు. ఈ వరదలు హిమాచల్ ప్రదేశ్, ఢిల్లీ, హర్యానా, ఉత్తర ప్రదేశ్ రాష్ట్రాలనూ, నేపాల్ పశ్చిమ భాగాన్ని, టిబెట్ పశ్చిమ భాగాన్ని తాకినా కూడా 95% బాధితులు ఉత్తరాఖండ్ కు చెందిన వారే.
