[[మెగస్తనీసు]] రచించిన ఇండికా పుస్తకం యొక్క పేరు కూడా ఈ నదికి గ్రీక్ లోని ఇండస్ పేరే. [[అలెగ్జాండర్]] ఈ నదిని దాటి భారతదేశంలోకి వచ్చిన విధానాన్ని అతని సైనికాధికారి నీర్చస్ కూడా ఇండికా పేరుతో ఓ పుస్తకం రాశాడు. ప్రాచీన గ్రీకులు భారతీయులను, పాకిస్థానీయులను కలిపి ఇండోయి అని పిలిచేవారు. ఇండోయి అనే పదానికి అచ్చంగా ఇండస్ నదికి చెందిన ప్రజలు అని అర్ధం.

===ఋగ్వేదంలో సింధు నది ప్రస్తావన===
ఋగ్వేదం చాలా పౌరాణిక నదుల గురించి ప్రస్తావించింది. అందులో సింధు నది ఒకటి. అందులో ప్రస్తావించిన ఆ నదే ప్రస్తుతపు ఈ సింధు నది అని నమ్మకం. ఋగ్వేదంలో సింధూ నది ప్రస్తావన దాదాపు 176సార్లు వచ్చింది. బహువచనంలో 95సార్లు సాధారణ అర్ధాలలో ఉపయోగింపబడింది. In the Rigveda, notably in the later hymns, the meaning of the word is narrowed to refer to the Indus river in particular, as in the list of rivers mentioned in the hymn of ''[[Nadistuti sukta]]''. The Rigvedic hymns apply a feminine gender to all the rivers mentioned therein but "Sindhu" is the only river attributed the masculine gender which means Sindhu is the warrior and greatest amoung all other rivers in whole world
