ఫెనైటోయిన్ (Phenytoin sodium) /fəˈnɪtoʊ[invalid input: 'ɨ']n/ ఫిట్స్ వ్యాధిలో ఉపయోగించే ప్రధానమైన మందు. దీనిని ముఖ్యంగా పాక్షికమైన, శరీరమంతా వ్యాపించే ఫిట్స్ నియంత్రణలో ప్రధాన పాత్రను పోషిస్తుంది. ఫిట్స్ కు మూలకారణమైన సోడియం చానెల్స్ ను నిరోధించడం ద్వారా పనిచేస్తుంది.^[1]

ఫెనైటోయిన్ (diphenylhydantoin) మొదటిసారిగా జర్మనీకి చెందిన రసాయనవేత్త హీన్రిక్ బిల్జ్ (Heinrich Biltz) 1908 లో తయారుచేశాడు.^[2] బిల్జ్ తన ఆవిష్కరణను పార్కే-డేవిస్ (Parke-Davis) సంస్థకు అమ్మేశాడు. అయితే 1938 లో హూస్టన్ మెరిట్ (Houston Merritt), ట్రేసీ పుట్నమ్ (Tracy Putnam) తదితర శాస్త్రవేత్తలు దీని ఉపయోగాన్ని ఫిట్స్ వ్యాధిలో కనుగొన్నారు. అంతవరకు ఉపయోగంలోనున్న ఫెనోబార్బిటాల్ (phenobarbital) వలె ఇది మత్తును కలిగించదని గుర్తించి విస్తృతంగా ఉపయోగించడానికి దోహదపడ్డారు.
